19TH CENTURY POLITICS A substantial lot of fifteen pieces by nineteenth-century American political leaders of various import composed entirely of A.L.S. format with differing pages and sizes, including some war- date during the Civil War. The lot includes an A.L.S. by JOHN H. EATON as Jackson's Secretary of War, 1p., 4to, Washington, May 24, [193?], in part: "...The President is in tolerably good health, improving I think...". Torn at middle left margin opposite still-present seal, slight folds and slight ink bleeding, else very good. A second interesting piece is an unpublished letter to "An Unknown Friend" by GEORGE BANCROFT, the renowned American historian who eulogized Abraham Lincoln, 1p., 8vo., New York, October 25, 1862, fine. Additional signed pieces by: BOIES PENROSE, CALEB B. SMITH, JAMES E. WATSON, EDWARDS PIERREPONT, JAMES MONROE ASHLEY, and more. An interesting collection of political figures worth further research, should be viewed.
