1965 VOTING RIGHTS ACT BILL SIGNING PEN A most important presidential relic, one of the nibbed pens used by President Lyndon B. Johnson to sign the landmark Voting Rights Act on August 6, 1965. The pen, made by Esterbrook, measures 6 1/2" long with a clear and black acrylic barrel, an Esterbrook nib and reads: "THE PRESIDENT - THE WHITE HOUSE". The pen is present but according to the consignor, the pens' original box was regrettably lost or discarded when this item was framed. Fine condition. Following the bill-signing ceremony, this pen was given by Johnson to noted photographer George Tames (1919-1994), a senior photographer with the Washington Bureau of the New York Times who photographed all the presidents from Roosevelt to Clinton. His most famous photograph, The Loneliest Job, portrays President Kennedy in 1963 silhouetted with his back to the camera leaning over his desk in the oval office. The pen was left by Tames to his son, Michael Tames, from whom it was obtained directly by our consignor. Sold with a letter of provenance from Michael Tames and a subsequent owner of the pen. The Voting Rights Act was one of Johnson's greatest accomplishments, in his eyes and those of the nation. outlawed the requirement that would-be voters in the United States take literacy tests or pay a poll tax to qualify to register to vote, and it provided for federal registration of voters - instead of state or local voter registration which had often been denied to minorities and poor voters - in areas that had less than 50% of eligible minority voters registered. The act also provided for Department of Justice oversight to registration, and the Department's approval for any change in voting law in districts whose populations were at least 5% Black. It was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson on August 6, 1965, and signed for a 25 year extensions by Presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush on July 27, 2006. A most important relic!
