1897 KLONDIKE GOLD RUSH ARCHIVE
An interesting collection of documents dating from the great Alaskan Gold Rush of 1897. Included are: an advertising brochure for the California and Northwest Mining Co., 4to., folded into thirds, stating: "Sailing from San Francisco on or about May 25th 1898 for Dawson and Yukon River Points via St. Michael. On the front is the Ocean Steamer 'Samoa' to connect with the New Dispatch River Steamer 'Clara'". The balance of the brochure gives descriptions of the two ships and rates for both water routes and then via Dyea and the Mountain Passes; a five page legal document from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts dated 1897, establishing a voluntary association to be known as the Chelsea Gold Mining Company; two handwritten documents, the first a power of attorney by Andrew Rogers, a member of the Chelsea Gold Mining Co, the second being an acknowledgement of the power of attorney; a sheet, 19" x 16" consisting of three maps, half the page is the Yukon River, a second map shows the Klondyke River, a third is a general map of Alaska; a hand-drawn map in pencil locating five claims each along the Yukon River, indicating "Staked on Sep 12, 1898"; three handwritten certifications for claims signed by the Recorder of Deeds; a 2pp A.L.S. from Fort Gibbon, Nov. 12, 1899, regarding selling whiskey to Indians by soldiers; a breakfast menu on letterhead for the Alaska Commercial Co.'s S.S. St. Paul, handwritten in pencil, including Mutton chops, Calves Liver, Clam Fritters and Corned Beef Hash; a mimeographed sheet titled "Field Sports July 4, 1900" to take place on the A.C. Co's grounds. Events include Indian sports, revolver and rifle marksmanship. Several additional pieces. A very scarce and unusual collection of items from the great Alaska Gold Rush. Many of these items may be unique. Condition varies but overall very good.
