1861 NAVAL SURGEON'S APPLICATION A good early war-date manuscript surgeon's application by George H. Marion, 7pp. legal folio, "Naval Hospital, Brooklyn, N. Y., Oct. 16, 1861", reading, in part: "...In accordance with requirements I make the following statements. I am 22 years of age, was born...in Brooklyn...I graduated in August 1860 at Williams College...I have been studying medicine with Dr. Frank H. Hamilton...I have witnessed...the practice of medicine in the several hospitals of Brooklyn...and also with the 31st N. Y. Vols...and also at Centreville, after the battle of Bull Run where over 200 wounded men were attended to by Dr. H and his assistant...". Following are eight medical related questions along with Marion's detailed answers. On Sept. 20, 1862, Marvin was commissioned as an acting assistant surgeon onboard the USS Miami which tragically met the ironclad CSS Albemarle, losing her captain, in Albemarle Sound, N. C. on April 19, 1864. A great Civil War era medical related document for the 19th century medical collector. Very good condition.
