Sale 38 Lot 25

(AMOS DOOLITTLE) (1754-1832) Prominent silversmith, known as the 'Revere of Connecticut'. Doolittle produced the first (and probably most accurate) visual depictions of the battles at Lexington and Concord. An American printed volume owned by the Doolittle family, being an edition of Robert Fleming's work The Fulfilling of the Scripture, Or an Essay shewing the exact accomplishment of the word of God, in his works ([Boston: Rogers and Fowle, for Nathaniel Procoter, 1743]) 12mo. 522pp. Bound in original leather boards and ribbed spine reinforced with tape at edges, wear to spine and boards title pages missing, page tears repaired, some toning to pages, otherwise very good condition. (Evans 5185) The first several pages contain manuscript notes in several hands noting the ownership history of the book. The first to appear is SAMUEL DOOLITTLE who notes that the "[T]this Book was printed in the year 1743 att Boston Saml Doolittle His Book". On the opposite page Doolittle has attempted to reproduce the title page. The next page bears two notes, the first reading "This was rit [sic] Att [sic] North haven [?] febrey [sic] the 21d 1769" and "Samuel Doolittle His Book August 1770". Three other signatures appear in the front flyleaf including "Enos Doolittle" "Susanna Doolittle Her Book", and "Stephen Doolittle His Book" A fine association piece.
Estimate $ 300-400
