(d. 1895) Civil War general; important writer on Ulysses S. Grant. Fine group of items belonging to General John L. Swift, including: Two Infantry Tactic books by Maj. Gen. Scott, both 1861, small 8vo., 228pp and 221pp, each with an appendix and bookplate of Lindsay Swift; A Golden Treasury for the Children of God, sm. 8vo., 479pp.; a half-length CDV of Swift in uniform holding his sword; a leather bound soft cover diary, 8vo., approx. 25pp. containing poems, scripture and observations. In small part: "...They tell us that man has dwelt upon the Earth for six thousand years and more. That the cradle of the universe was a garden rich, luxuriant, fruitful and delightful. There were no arts, no sciences, no literature, no gospel, nothing but the beauty of Eden...the first pair walked out from the garden..."; and an A.L.S. from statesman GEORGE S. BOUTWELL (1818-1905), 2pp., 8vo., Feb. 27, 1880, sending thanks for receipt of Swift's book on General Grant, in part: "Grant is a great figure and destined to grow. He has no end of enemies many of them claiming to be friends with a but or an if...". Very good.
