(JAMES BUCHANAN) JAMES BUCHANAN, SR.Father of James Buchanan, 15th President of the United States. Scarce A.D.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., Franklin County, [Penna.], Apr. 23, 1808, an invoice directed to John Stringer for the sum of £1-2-9 for "mending shoes"; "2 loggs [sic] Squaring..."; "1 Plough beam" and most interestingly, two entries for shoes, one for "black Children" and the other for "the black boy". Buchanan Sr. and his growing family arrived in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania in 1802, and he soon became a prominent shopkeeper there. Slavery ended in Pennsylvania through a system of gradual manumission that began in 1780 that allowed slavery to continue in a limited fashion well into the 1820s. Toned at margins, with very minor chipping, usual folds, else very good.
